| Gaming in the UK |

Gambling is legal in the United Kingdom and has been since the 1960s. The British, for the most part, can bet on just about anything: sports games, bingo, the horses through bets at bookies. At the present time bingo playing takes place at private clubs for the most part without cash prizes. Prizes have to be in terms of merchandise or tickets, etc. The only bingo games with cash prizes are the National Games and they have big prizes. Gambling online is legal but gambling on poker and blackjack isn’t currently legal.
New regulations are due to go into effect in 2007 that will make all forms of internet gaming legal. British owned online casinos will be legal and many new entrants are expected into the growing industry. To operate an online casino from the U.K. the operators have to show that their operations are fair and honest and they have methods in place to prevent underage entities from gambling. In addition, clubs will be open to the public if they want. People will be able to walk in off the street. Membership will no longer be necessary for people to gamble or play bingo. Casinos will be able to stay open round the clock if they want.
There are also plans for the development of Las Vegas style mega resorts to be built. Both online casinos and land based casinos will be subject to regulation which will ensure that they conform to certain standards of practice. The British are basically ensuring safe gaming. |
